HOM-NJ partners with local organizations that are providing programming to children and families in under-resourced communities. HOM provides financial support, technical assistance and leadership development resources to strengthen the voice and increase the effectiveness of local leaders and organizations.
HOM-NJ was founded in 2021 by Andrew Simon as a way to honor his mother, Miriam, who was a staunch advocate for social justice. Recognizing that local leaders are best positioned to address the needs of their communities, HOM-NJ identifies and partners with exemplary community-based organizations that are providing critical programming in under-resourced communities.
HOM-NJ’s first partnership was with the Krumville School House, a small non-profit serving families living in Ulster County, New York. HOM worked closely with Krumville School House to create and implement arts and education programs for the community.
For the past 18 months, HOM-NJ has been working with the Thirteenth Avenue School in Newark, New Jersey. Through this collaboration, HOM-NJ has supported the Thirteenth Avenue School in the following ways:
Sustaining its community garden
Stocking the school’s food pantry
Provided after school yoga instruction for youth in grades pre-K through 2nd
Provided supplies to support after school program activities
House of Miriam NJ is partnering with the New Ark Freedom School and the Children’s Defense Fund in summer 2024 on a Freedom School program in Newark. House of Miriam NJ will support K-2 activities. This program is supported by a grant from the State of New Jersey Dept. of Community Affairs.
